How to compare total repayment on an online loan

The easiest way to compare two offers is to ask how much money reaches you and how much money must leave you by the end of the agreement.

Start with equal amounts

Compare a similar amount over a similar repayment period. Products with different terms can produce very different total costs even when their headline rates look close.

Account for all charges

Separate interest from processing or service charges that are required for the product. Then compare the result with the lender’s stated total repayment.

Use percentages carefully

Check what period a rate refers to and avoid comparing daily, monthly and annual figures as if they were the same measure. The actual currency amount provides an additional reality check.

Review due dates

A manageable repayment schedule matters. Check the number of payments, exact dates, available payment methods and rules that apply if you repay early or late.
