APR, fees and total loan cost: what to compare
APR is useful, but affordability depends on the complete payment schedule and the dollars you will repay. Compare products using the same amount and a similar term whenever possible.
Compare like with like
A short installment loan and a longer loan can produce very different monthly payments and total costs. Start with the amount you need and a repayment period that fits the same goal.
Separate the rate from fees
Review interest and any required origination or service charges disclosed for the product. The final documents should make it possible to understand the amount financed and total repayment.
Use APR as a comparison measure
APR expresses borrowing cost on an annual basis under the applicable disclosure method. It is valuable for comparison, but it should be read together with the actual dollar cost and payment count.
Stress-test the payment schedule
Check whether each due date fits your income and essential expenses. Also review early-payment terms and the consequences of a missed or late payment.
