How to review an online lender before applying

A polished application flow is not enough. Verify the business, read the disclosures and keep a copy of the exact terms before completing the application.

Know who the lender is

The site or marketplace name may differ from the business named in the loan agreement. Check the legal name, contact information and disclosures that identify the party offering the credit.

Review the final numbers

Do not rely on a prequalification message or maximum amount alone. Compare the actual amount financed, APR, fees, payment amount and total repayment.

Read before e-signing

Open the agreement and disclosures before completing an electronic signature. Save copies locally so you can refer to them later.

Check servicing and payment options

Find out who receives payments, what methods are available and how to raise a billing question. Keep confirmation numbers for payments and support cases.

Five things to verify

  • lender identity
  • disclosures
  • APR and fees
  • payment schedule
  • servicing contact
