Personal-loan costs in South Africa: compare the quotation, not just the instalment

A manageable monthly instalment does not establish that a loan is inexpensive. Use the lender’s actual quotation and compare the same amount and repayment dates. This is an educational checklist, not a personalised recommendation.

Start with usable funds

Write down the requested principal and the rand amount that will reach your account. If charges are deducted or financed, identify them separately. Comparing a R5,000 headline limit with R5,000 actually received is not necessarily comparing the same borrowing need.

Put all normal charges on one sheet

Record interest, initiation fees, recurring service charges and any other mandatory cost specified in the quotation. For any insurance or additional service, ask whether it is required and how its cost appears in the repayment schedule. Do not treat a blank field in a catalogue as a zero charge.

Compare the full schedule

List the payment amount, number of instalments and final date. Add all payments plus separately payable mandatory charges without counting the same charge twice. Compare the total with the net amount received. Extending the term can reduce each instalment while increasing the total paid.

Keep exceptional charges separate

Read what happens after a missed payment, whether rates or fees can change and how an early-settlement quotation is obtained. These are important risks, but do not mix a hypothetical default charge into a normal on-time cost example. Ask the provider to resolve unclear figures before signing.

Check the provider and your budget

The NCR provides a register for checking a provider’s name and registration. A catalogue cannot replace that check or the provider’s affordability assessment. Keep the quotation, agreement and support contacts, and test the instalment against essential expenses and existing debt rather than an assumed future income increase.

Before accepting a quotation

  • net rand amount received
  • all mandatory once-off and recurring charges
  • number and dates of instalments
  • total payable
  • early-settlement and late-payment terms
  • legal provider checked independently
